Helm’s Bill Establishing ‘Juneteenth National Freedom Day’ Advances to House Floor
HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin) establishing Juneteenth National Freedom Day as an annual observance in Pennsylvania was unanimously approved by the House Urban Affairs Committee today. House Bill 2128 will next be considered by the full House of Representatives.

“Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States,” said Helm. “Today, it is a time to celebrate African-American freedom by emphasizing education and achievement. Juneteenth National Freedom Day is recognized annually in at least 37 states and we need to add Pennsylvania to that list.”

Helm’s bill would provide for the annual designation of the third Saturday in June as Juneteenth National Freedom Day in Pennsylvania. By doing so, governmental entities, civic organizations and schools would be encouraged to observe the day in a manner that emphasizes the meaning of the Emancipation Proclamation and its importance to those who cherish liberty and equality for all people.

In 2012, the House passed a resolution to recognize Juneteenth National Freedom Day in that year.
