Helm Supports Budget Bill that Cuts Spending and Holds the Line on Taxes
4/6/2017
HARRISBURG – Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin/Lebanon) on Tuesday joined a majority of her House colleagues in supporting the budget plan for fiscal year 2017-18. The spending proposal totals $31.52 billion, which is $815 million below Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget blueprint and $246 million less than the current fiscal year. House Bill 218 does not raise taxes and continues to allocate additional funding to education and human services.

Helm issued the following statement regarding the budget bill:

“I am especially encouraged we were able to produce a balanced spending plan in early April that does not increase the burden on Pennsylvania taxpayers while continuing to adequately fund essential government services.

“There is good news for education as this proposal would increase spending for our public school by $150 million, for a record total of $11.8 billion. It would also provide services to an additional 4,500 individuals with disabilities.

“The budget bill begins the process of reinventing state government and returning the focus back to its core functions. Our plan accepts many of the governor’s cuts and his ideas to consolidate departments.

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, we still have much work to do in the weeks ahead. But I remain hopeful we can avoid the stalemates of the past and finalize a spending plan before the June 30 deadline.”

House Bill 218 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
